The Bruce/Grey Brief

recaps · recap · October 10, 2026

South Bruce Peninsula Regular Council — Tuesday, October 6, 2026

Regional transit network study presented Bruce County tabled a feasibility study for a United Regional Traffic Network spanning Bruce, Grey, Dufferin, and Wellington counties. The proposed system includes three year-round routes and one seasonal route — notably a summer service linking Lion’s Head to Chippewa Hill via Wiarton and Sauble Beach, running three days per week between Victoria Day and Labour Day. Base routes would operate Monday to Saturday, roughly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Councillors raised concerns that Highway 6 — the Wiarton-to-Tobermory corridor — was excluded despite its traffic volumes. Bruce County is expected to return with an implementation report and formal recommendations in early 2027.

OPP Detachment Board deficit authorized Council approved South Bruce Peninsula’s $3,011 share of a projected $23,279 operating deficit for the Grey Bruce OPP Detachment Board for fiscal year 2026, attributed to revised municipal contributions under the Community Safety and Policing Act. Councillors expressed frustration that the Board’s roughly $104,000 total budget receives only approximately $5,000 from provincial sources, and indicated the municipality should press higher levels of government on the issue. A separate OPP policing-cost line — including 2027 provincial coverage discussions — was clarified as a distinct budget with no financial relationship to the Board deficit.

New community office on budget and on schedule Foundation work is underway on the new community office and council house, with exterior walls to be clad in locally sourced natural stone and steel roof installation beginning the following week, with work planned through mid-November. Separately, doctors have agreed in principle to occupy a unit in the building; an architect has developed a concept layout and change order costs were described as low, pending final pricing.

By-laws carried By-law 65-2026 was given first and second reading, authorizing the Mayor and Clerk to execute an agreement between the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling Association and Waste Management of Canada Corporation. By-law 64-2026 was also carried; its subject matter was partially inaudible in the public record.

Public participation reform directed Staff were directed to prepare a 2027 report on amending the procedure by-law to create a standing agenda item allowing residents to address council without registering as a formal delegation. Council also discussed renaming “Unfinished Business” to “Running Projects.”

Mallory Beach Road delayed A statement from Mayor Kirkland confirmed reconstruction has been pushed back due to property encroachment legal clarifications, curve realignment requirements, and utility coordination. A virtual public information event is planned for late 2027; construction is now scheduled to begin that year.
